How Do Royalty Splits Work?

Learn how to assign master and publishing rightsholder shares correctly and why totals must equal 100% before submission.

Royalty splits define who owns the rights to a song.

There are two types:

Master rightsholders own the recording.
Publishing rightsholders own the composition.

In both cases, the total shares must equal 100%.

If the total does not equal 100%, submission will be blocked.

Music Gateway does not take ownership of your rights. If you use Publishing Administration or Sync Representation, you grant us permission to represent and collect on your behalf. Ownership remains with you.
