How does YouTube Content ID work?

Content ID is a system used by YouTube to identify and manage copyright-protected content.

When a video is uploaded to YouTube, it is scanned against a database of audio content submitted by us for each of your releases.

If Content ID finds a match, it applies a claim to the matching video. Depending on the copyright owner’s Content ID settings, the claim can result in one of the following actions:

  • Blocks a video from being viewed
  • Monetises the video by running ads against it and sometimes sharing revenue with the uploader
  • Tracks the video’s viewership statistics
